picking up also in Bucks/Oxon

It looks like being quite a decent season everywhere, judging from the last few blogs. In the woods up here, double figures have been seen during the last 3 days. The behaviour has involved mainly ride skimming and taking minerals when landed, with rapid flights at medium height around the trees and the sallows. No territorial behaviour of any note yet.
The male pictured behaved unusually in my experience: he settled on hazel just a few feet above the ground in complete shade with his wings fully open; this allowed us to enjoy the purple sheen over both wings for some minutes. By the way, a new bait, a
very stinky Swedish fish called Surstromming attracted only flies!
